Tumpie’s always has a crowd. That’s because their steaks are legendary. When you’re in the mood for an excellent cut of meat served with some true Southern side dishes, it doesn’t get much better. Located in ‘the sticks’, you’ll find a great atmosphere very suitable for such a great a steakhouse.

The History of Tumpie’s

In 1888, Jim and Ann Brantley, along with friends, cut the pine trees from their property and built their home. This was the Brantley home for many generations.

In the early 1960′s, Albert Clark and his wife, Tumpie, bought the Brantley home place and lived there, together with their family, until 1983 when Mr. Clark passed away. Tumpie loved her home and never wanted to leave it. She stayed there until her health deteriorated. She passed away in 1998. During her lifetime, she was known for her home cooking.

Wayne Shay, Tumpie’s son-in-law, always wanted a small restaurant. So, in 1999, he began remodeling Tumpie’s home. Everything was used in the process. The tables were made from the interior walls, the back screen door was used for a mirror and the original windows now have some of Tumpie’s favorite recipes, as well as pictures of some of Tumpie’s family and close friends along with some pictures of the original Brantley family. The walls hold many of Tumpie’s favorites such as her Elvis Collection as well as pieces which represent part of her life such as the scales she used to weigh the cotton, the push plow Mr. Clark used to tend their garden, the old well tickles of days gone by when water was drawn from the well, some of her fans she used during church and the old steel guitar which she and her father played, her wooden ironing board and water bottle used to sprinkle the clothes before putting them in the cooler prior to ironing. The kerosene heater she used for years, the quilts she made by hand from pieces of old clothing and scrap material, as well as her sewing machine she used. These are all part of her time.

Tumpie’s Family Steakhouse was opened November 16, 2000. Wayne Shay is the owner and cook, while Christopher Clark, Tumpie’s grandson, is the manager.
